How to up your fitness game

Ready to add abit of extra grunt to your normal routine? Here’s five ways to turn that fitness dial up a notch, and keep boredom at bay.

While I love different workouts, at the end of the day, most people are creatures of comfort. We’re humans, and perfectly imperfect. We find what works for us (thank you ATFG!) and do that one thing.

This has its pros and cons. Pros: you love that workout, and it doesn’t even feel like exercise or effort. Cons: you can get stuck in routine, fall out of love, and let other commitments hijack your precious exercise time.

One of the easiest ways to keep your exercise mojo up is to add abit of extra grunt. Depending on what you add/do, you will be chuffed at the result. Not only will you feel fitter and stronger, but your mental toughness will be a force to reckon with.

Here are five simple ways to up your fitness game

1. Add extra resistance – don a weighted vest/ankle weights/use a resistance band in your next workout to get those muscles working. The added resistance forces you to work harder and by doing so, you build more strength. Weighted vests are especially good for building core strength and improving balance.

2. Add on a hero round – after you finish a workout or training session, add one last round and make it your best. Go for compound movements that work a group of muscles. Think mountain climbers, burpees, star jumps, lateral shoot throughs etc. For extra kick, add in a 100-metre dash or hill sprint.

3. Do the harder version – always work within your limits, but challenge yourself by taking the next level up. Go from knees to toes in push-ups, supported plank to full plank, jumping sumo squats than regular squats, lunges to alternating jumping lunges – you get the drift.

4. Make AMRAP your mantra – AMRAP stands for as-many-reps-as-possible and is a great way, particularly in a circuit workout, to improve in every round. Just be mindful that your form is still on point, quality is always better than quantity.

5. Train with a fit buddy – got that fit friend you always avoid working out with? Use them to help push you a little more and achieve more than you thought. Otherwise, mirror the efforts of that person absolutely crushing it to the best of your ability and give yourself a pat on the back for trying your best.
