How to fit in exercise while you’re on holidays

Perhaps the greatest word in the English language is…HOLIDAYS! But I appreciate for some, exercising on your time off  is not on the ‘must do’ list. You’re going on holidays to relax and unwind – not sweat it out. I get it, 100%. It’s the highlight of the year. Finally, two weeks off from an otherwise busy and hectic lifestyle of juggling family, work, side hustles, social commitments and more!

What I’ve learnt though is throwing in some exercise while you’re in a relaxed mode, does wonders for your energy levels and really lets you de-stress. And the plus side, it contributes to a wonderful holiday experience.

So I thought I’d share some tips I’ve learnt to keep up your fitness while you’re on a well deserved break.

Here are my five tips on how to fit in exercise while you’re on holidays:

1. Pack clothing that can double as work out gear. A pair of running shorts and a moisture wicking t-shirt are perfect for excursions and getting around in general. Having them packed will be a reminder to get some sort of activity in, plus they’re super comfortable. Ladies, don’t forget your sports bra.

2. Check out what’s on offer. When planning your holiday, find out what floor the gym/pool is on and what free classes are offered. You never know what you might learn and where…I learnt Tai Chi, on a junk boat, in the middle of Halong Bay in Vietnam, in the pouring rain! (isn’t rain good for the soul…?)

3. Opt for a walking sight-seeing tour or find an activity that involves some kind of physical exercise – a hike, kayaking, putt-putt – there’s lots of things that can keep kids and in-laws entertained too.

4. Have in mind a short workout you can do in your room. There are tons of these online, in magazines and touted on fitness celebrity blogs. My quick go to is 4 exercises repeated six times as fast as I can: x10 pushups, x20 pistol squats, x30 bicycle kicks, x40 air squats, in that order.

5. Snap up some cheap knock-off workout gear! Of course this depends on where you’re holidaying (like Asia) but I can guarantee new gear will keep you inspired and looking for an excuse to put it on.
